Young Man is Found Dead In His Room..Result of Using Morphine
B. Tom Phillips, A Miner, Victim of Drug...Was Alone in the house...Lived with his Brother and Wife, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Phillips...Coroners inquest held.
Tom Phillips took an over dose of morphine Wednesday night at the home of his brother, Bert Phillips, 615 North Eighth street, and was found dead by his sister-in-law about noon Thursday. He was lying on the bed upstairs, with all his clothes on excepting his coat, which was hanging down stairs and contained a morphine bottle almost empty. In his trunk in the room in which he died was a large quantity of the drug also.
He was a quiet, peaceable young man of near 30 and the coroners verdict is that he met death accidentally by taking an over dose of morphine.
The report has been circulated that he wrote a letter to Walter Davis, with whom he formerly kept bachelor's quarters, intimating that he intended to take his life. The note really said nothing to warrant this the phrase in question saying that if Davis wanted to see him he had better do so pretty soon. It may have been on some matter of business. At the same time some are inclined to think the death intentional as he was rather morose and melancholy at times.
The coroner's jury, consisting of J.C. Huggins, Clyde Lane and W.J. Jones made a thorough investigation and found no note or anything to indicate what had been the intentions of the dead man. They considered the death due to an over dose of morphine and returned such a verdict. The body was taken to his father's home after the inquest.
He leaves two brothers; Bert and William, and two sisters, Miss Josie and Mrs. John Hitchins.
His father, William Phillips, Sr. lived a couple of blocks away to the south but the unfortunate man had not lived at home for some time. For the past month or more he had lived with his brother Bert who was married recently. When the death occurred no one else was in the house, his brother having gone to Brazil to work in the mines. Mrs. Phillips had retuned to the elder Phillips home and going to the house Thursday found him dead. She called the neighbors, Mrs. W.D. Faulker and son, Charley, at once and they called Mr. Faulkner who notified Sheriff Davis and the coroner.
