Colonel F. Betz
1835, when I was 17 years old I fired an engine for the Sicke Valley Railroad from Ashland, Ky., to Columbus, O. and continued this until the next fall when I had a wreck running into a turntable which someone had left open. I quit then and came with my folks to Lincoln, Neb., and they rented a farm six miles east of town. I worked on a farm for a man named Finley and for two years managed it and raised corn, cattle and hogs. In 1890 I bought a team of horses and started to work grading for the Railroad which was building a road from Lincoln to Weeping Water and then went to Beatrice and worked there for the Rock Island. I finished that job in 1891. With my earnings I bought more teams and went to Great Bend, Kans. to work. The Rock Island was building a road from Pratt Center to the State line south and I got part of that line to build. I hired several teams and we camped near a country school near Cullison, Kans. That is where I met Nellie Curran. She was teacher in that school. During a terrible wind storm, the school door blew open and she was unable to close it. I saw her trouble and went to help her and then a courtship of Sunday night calls began. We were married in Lincoln October 8, l889. I moved back to Lincoln and then to Sioux City and took the construction of the road for the short line now called the Great Northern from Randolph, Neb., to Covington now called South Sioux City, then followed this with the building of the Sioux City Northern from Garretson to Merrill, Ia. I got as far as Doon that year and went to Lincoln to be married. We lived in Doon at the Bonney Doon hotel and Blanche was born June 27, 1890. When it froze up in the fall we moved to Sioux City. I bought a lot on West Second and built a five room cottage.
In 1892 I built the lead street car line up the first hollow West of Springdale over the hill down into Leeds and thru Krummans addition. After the company sold all the lots along this route they changed the tract to run parallel to the railroad track. During this year there was a big flood on the Floyd River and 10 people were drowned and nearly 200 houses washed away. In 1893 I built the street car line four miles from Moringside South through the A. S. Garretson addition. Again the company sold all the lots and then changed the track. Then I graded Fourth street and laid the car tracks and then I got orders from John Pierce, D. T. Hedges and A. S. Garretson to grade Fifth street and lay tracks there to Riverside along the Railroads tracks, which I did. I then had 60 mules to pull street cars up Jackson street on a cable line and an elevated line to Morningside.
Grading from Thirtieth street across from Water to Jennings was my next city work. The lots on both sides of thirtieth belonged to Pierce and Hedges and I graded them. They owned all of the Northside at that time from twentieth North to 42nd. I graded all the lots from 27th to 32nd street on both sides of Jackson up to 29th where John Pierce built his fine stone home now the Earle Martin residence. They had 200 teams grading in their additions at this time. In 1897 I shipped my outfit to Missouri and graded 15 miles of road for the Rock Island. That winter there was a heavy snow in S. D. and I hired out my teams to haul snow from the stockyards. In the spring I worked for the Illinois Central Railroad from Missouri Valley to Council Bluffs filling bridges. When this was finished I accepted a contract from the Hill Bros. and dug out a big reservoir for the Great Northern Railroad and then a similar contract for the Milwaukee at Mystic, Mo. I returned to Sioux City for the winter.
1895 I completed the road bed from Merrill to Sioux City. That year the railroad bought enough land for yards on the East bottoms. They built 160 houses on this property, sold them and moved them for the purchasers, The railroad let me contract for the moving since I had two house moving outfits. In the spring of 1896 I got the contract for grading out the Union depot basement located between Pierce and Douglas on Third. This dirt I hauled down to where I had moved the houses and filled up those old cellars. Then I shipped back to Doon and stripped a gravel pit. Finishing this I took a contract for the road bed for the railroad from Moville to Sergeant Bluffs. There is where I bought my first grading machine and wagons. This work was followed by the building of a new yards and grade for the Illinois Central Railroad at Fort Dodge. The Illinois Central had a washout between Cherokee and Onawa with one half the dump washed out. I filled this and then received a contract for the Milwaukee to build a road from Waukon, Ia, to the ore mines seven miles from there. Then filled a contract for the same railroad from Muscatine to Ottumwa and filled all the Bridges from Ottumwa to Kansas City, Mo. Then they shipped me to Marion, Ia. where I graded for a new yards. From there I went to Manning, Ia. and built a road to Harlan; thence to Yankton where I shouldered the Milwaukee roadbed to Elk Point. In 1902 I built the yards at North Riverside. I also graded for a new yards at Atkinson, Ia. and then built the grade for the Burlington Railroad from South Sioux City to Homer thru the Indian reservation South to Omaha.
In 1904 I went to Mitchell, S.D. and graded the land for a new stock yards then to Hawarden and shouldered and raised the grade and ditch to Elk Point. This was followed by a return to Yankton where I built the grade from town out to the asylum and the road from Yankton to Platte. The road from Chanberlain thru the Black Hills and Rapid City was my next work. Then we moved to Java 20 miles this side of Mobridge and built the coast line from Java to the Missouri and then the yards at Mobridge. I built the road to Lemon and in 1909 we graded the railroad to Mile City, Mont. We then shipped to Dewdel, S. D. and straightened the line and shoulders from the Railroad to Aberdeen leaving some of the towns a mile from the depot. In 1910 we graded 80 acres for a fair ground and race track for George Louren of LeMars. We then moved to Perry, Ia. and took some double track work from there to Marion and then Back to Sioux City to do some construction work.
This winter Helen and I went to California to the World's Fair. While there we visited the tractor factory to look at the implements. They demonstrated all the work the tractor would do and took a 60 cut and pulled out a tree nine inches in diameter and said it would pull as much as 24 head of mules. I was using 18 head of mules to pull the grading machine. They sold me one of their best tractors for $5500. The freight to Sioux City was $350 but the company paid the expense of shipping for the privilege of taking it to Kansas City for display at the fair. When it arrived here in Sioux City I put a short tongue on the grading machine and the tractor pulled it without any trouble. Then I bought nine more tractors and used them hauling dirt wagons and pulling out trees and other heavy work.
In 1912 there was a fire which covered three blocks from Jackson to Pierce on Fourth. I cleaned that out and pulled down the walls and the same for the Mondax in the fire at Fourth and Pieree in 1919. I built 162 miles of country roads and 126 miles of state roads among them the road 10 miles West of Dubuque to Clinton around the Mississippi Bluffs by way of Sabula, Ia. This was the heaviest grading work ever let by the State. There were 450 thousand yards of solid rock and 220 yards of loose rock to handle besides 980,000 yards of dirt. We had three years to complete the job and finished four month ahead of time. During this job I suffered a double fracture of the right arm in a filling station at Correctionville where we had stopped for gas - fell over the hose. I then shipped my outfit to Murphysboro, Mo. and took 12 miles of heavy work using two draglines and two grading machines and l0 tractors. We put that grade up in 20 months complete and cleared the right of way. It was heavy timber and had to be grubbed out ahead of the draglines and machines. I then shipped back to Dubuque and graded 12 miles of county work 14 miles of state work near Anamosa. I sold out in 1937.
I have never been sick except for various accidents. In 1926 I had an auto wreck West of Algona when passing a truck. I was forced off the road, turned over several times and the bow of the top broke and punctured ray chest going thru the left lung and out the back. A passerby took me to the Algona hospital, My family came immediately and brought Dr. P. E. Sawyer. Rather than interfere with the local Doctor he did nothing to relieve me and returned to Sioux City. Nellie then got Dr. P. B. McLaughlin. In just a few minutes he relieved the pressure from the accumulation of air in my body, strapped me tight and I was out of immediate danger. He had a small cigarette box. He tore the lid off and out it over the hole in my chest and the box over the hole in my back and had the nurse bandage them there. He then pumped out the air. The following evening I was able to sit up.
In 1942 in July I had a heart attack at Lake Okoboji, my first illness. During my life in Sioux City I built the first two garages and 29 houses and have had only one lawsuit in 54 years.

Daniel and Elizabeth (Phillips) Saxon, who were natives of Lancashire, England, and Cumberland, Maryland, respectively. The father, who was born in the year 1829, was a young man of twenty-one when he crossed the Atlantic to the United States in 1850. He spent some years in the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky and about 1860 located in Mercer county, Illinois, where he met the lady who afterward became his wife and who was residing with a sister at that time. Daniel Saxon prospected for coal and also took contracts for the sinking of coal shafts. In 1883 he left Mercer county and made his way to Frontier county, Nebraska, where he took up a homestead claim and carried on general agricultural pursuits until the time of his demise in May, 1891. His widow still survives and now makes her home with her children.

GEORGE P. SAXON BURIED SUNDAY
Funeral services for George P. Saxon, 72, resident of Dixon County for 40 years, were held Sunday afternoon. Mr. Saxon passed away at his home Friday, May 24th. Rev George Bray conducted services at the home and from the Presbyterian church in Ponca. Rites at the grave were in charge of the Ponca Masonic lodge. Interment was made in Silver Ridge cemetery, under direction of Mohr's Mortuary.
The following obituary was read at the church service, by Rev. Bray:
George Platt Saxon, was born at Preemption, Ill., June 15th, 1867. During his youth his father moved his family to Moorefield, Neb., where he filed on a homestead and builded a house. When George was twenty-four years old his father died, leaving the responsibility of the farm to him and his younger brothers.
Years of drought and resultant crop failures were discouraging, and hearing glowing accounts of Dixon county, through a friend, he came to Newcastle in 1900. Several busy, happy years followed; then at the urgent request of his mother, married brothers, and sisters, he returned to the maternal home.
However the lure of Dixon county was upon him and the spring of 1906 found him again in Newcastle. He purchased a farm, and there has made his home; with the exception of a few years he lived in Montana.
June 12th, 1906, he was married to Rosalie Price. To this union four sons were born, George Everett, of Sheldon, Ia., Merle Eldon, and Clifford, both of Ponca, and Paul Buell who preceded him in death. He was baptized in infancy in the Presbyterian church, and believed in "what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with they God." He was a member of the Masonic lodge.
For many years he was an asthmatic, but never allowed his affliction to prevent him from helping a neighbor, or any person in need. May 24, 1940 he succumbed in peaceful sleep leaving to mourn his absence, his wife, three sons, five grandchildren, his brother Charles, of Wyoming, Ia., and other relatives and many friends. He was 72.# Change Date: 23 Jul 2006 at 22:00:35

August 4, 1869Charles F. Saxon took up his abode on his present farm in Madison township in 1900 and here owns one hundred and sixty acres of rich and productive land which is the visible evidence of a well spent, active and honorable life. His birth occurred in Mercer county, Illinois, on the 4th of August, 1869, his parents being Daniel and Elizabeth (Phillips) Saxon, who were natives of Lancashire, England, and Cumberland, Maryland, respectively.
Charles F. Saxon obtained his education in the common schools and remained under the parental roof until twenty-five years of age, when he came to Jones county, Iowa, and for five years was busily engaged in the cultivation of a tract of rented land. In 1899 he rented a place of one hundred and forty acres ;and a year later bought and located on the farm of one hundred and ten acres in Madison township on which he has since continued to reside. In the spring of 1909 he extended the boundaries of the place by the purchase of an adjoining tract of fifty acres, so that his farm now embraces a quarter section of land, all well improved and highly cultivated. In addition to raising the cereals best adapted to soil and climate he also deals in stock to some extent, feeding a carload of cattle annually, and in both branches of his business is meeting with a most gratifying and well merited measure of success. On the 6th of June, 1901, Mr. Saxon was united in marriage to Miss Lucy L. Brunner, of Marble Rock, Floyd county, Iowa, by whom he has two children, Dorothy E. and Carl B. He is a republican in his political views but does not consider himself bound by party ties and at local elections casts his ballot for the candidate whom he believes best qualified. He capably served as census enumerator for four years and at the present time is acting as a township committeeman. Fraternally he is identified with Elliott Lodge, No. 10, Highland Noblemen, and in religious faith is a Presbyterian, being a member of the board of trustees of the church. His wife holds membership in the Baptist church. Since starting out in life on his own account he has worked on persistently, year after year, and his diligence and perseverance constitute the basis of his present prosperity.
