IN MEMORIAM
Again the Reaper has thrust in his sickle. This time not into the golden grain of age, that he might gather a sheaf ripe and ready for the garner, but into the unmatured and tender growth of youth. We bow our heads in sorrow over what man, in his nearsightedness is prone to look upon as a frustration of hopes and possibilities. Though in grief, we must not forget that God is love, and that he rules in all worlds. We may not know to what better things he bears away our loved ones. As "all things work together for good to those that love the Lord," the great day will reveal that what seemed to us ruthless hands were rather fingers of most tender compassion. The life on earth of Alton Gordon Alden is finished, but his career has only begun. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Alden and was born to them September 16th, 1896. Gordon was of bright and sunny disposition, and was beloved not only in the home but also by his schoolmates and friends. He was full of fun, and in his play made things lively for his associates in action and for his competitors in effort. His love for the beautiful was shown by the pleasure he took in flowers - those of bright colors being especially attractive to him. He early developed characteristics that gave promise of a clean, strong manhood. He kept his mouth free from corrupt speech and foul smell. He had little or no patience with the habits that many boys seem to think it manly to form. He was outspoken and vigorous in his denunciations of the use and sale of intoxicating drinks, and contributed of his own money to help the temperance cause. As a little boy he counted himself in the flock of the Good Shepherd and insisted that he belonged to the church even before he was formally received, which event took place January 3rd, 1909, he becoming a member of the Wyoming Presbyterian church under the pastorate of the Rev. W.H. Ilsley. He greatly enjoyed the Sunday school of his church, and was a very regular attendant. Beginning with May, 1909 as a member of Mrs. Kirkpatrick's class he did not miss a session for more than eighteen months and with in that time won a gold button as a reward of regularity. He entered the Wyoming High School last fall where he was doing good work. His teachers speak highly of him as a pupil, for he was steady and painstaking in his work. With marked pluck he stuck to school at times when he was scarcely able to be there. Gordon had not been well for about three weeks before his death, but was not confined to his bed and was not considered in a dangerous condition till a few hours before he passed away, when neuralgia developed. In the early morning of April 6th, 1911, this went to his heart and almost without warning he slipped away. Besides his parents he leaves two sister and two brothers: Misses Elva Theresa and Ruth Viola, and Messrs. William Herbert and Robert George. One sister, Mary Jane, preceded him in death. H.E.W.

On Thursday morning, April 6th, Gordon fell asleep, and on Sunday afternoon, April 9th, the body was laid to rest in the Silent City on the hill. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in charge of the Rev. A.F. Nickless, pastor of the Wyoming Presbyterian church. A male quartette composed of A.A. Vaugon, F.R. Ketchum, W.J. Beckwith and R.M. Corbit then sang that beautiful song "Beautiful Homeland," This was followed with Scripture reading by Rev. Nickless "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" was very beautifully rendered by Mrs. Fred Day. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev H.E. Wilcox, pastor of the Wyoming Methodist Episcopal church, who took for his text the 54th verse of 1st Corinthians:
"So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory."
from which he preached a very able sermon and developed the theme: "The Contrast of Christianity with the Spirit of the world."
Following this the Quartette gave another selection "The Everlasting Arms." Miss Alice Kirkpatrick presided at the piano.
After viewing the remains the funeral cortege took up its march to the Wyoming cemetery, where all that was mortal of Alton Gordon Alden was consigned to the bosom of Mother Earth. The pallbearers were: George, Leslie and Allison Fishwild and Archie Butler.
The Freshman Class of the Wyoming High School attended the services in a boy, and at the cemetery deposited sweet flowers upon the casket, thus showing their love and esteem for their departed classmate.

(The following tribute to the pure life of Alton Gordon Alden was received last week. The author is unknown to us, but the sentiment is so good we gladly give it space.--EDITOR)
Yes, they are leaving us one by one;
Leaving us soon as their work is done;
Left all alone with our stoney grief,
Only clinging to that belief
That our Savior left to us.

Death beckons to young as well as to old,
One by one their forms grow cold,
And they take their flight from earthly mold;
Sometime, somewhere, a bell is tolled,
For they've gone home to God.

Death snatches our children from our midst,
At whatever time the angel bidst;
Our schoolmates quietly slip away
Without the warning of a day,
To that better land be yo.

The boatman over the waves of Jordon
Has silently crossed with little Gordon;
They passed the brink at break of day,
But meet we may, I hope and pray,
N the Land not far away.

BETZ BROTHERS ARE RELEASED
Sioux City Civilians Captured by Japs on Way Home
Two Sioux City brothers who for more than three years have been Japanese prisoners of was are coming home - one to a daughter he has never seen, both to the news that their father has been dead more than a year.
They are Paul and Ralph Betz, sons of Mrs. C.F. Betz, 2023 Nebraska street, who were taken prisoners December 7, 1941, on Guam, where they had been directing construction work since June, 1941.
Mrs. Betz received word of her son's release in a telegram from the Pacific Foundation Construction company, San Francisco, which employed them on the construction project. A radio announcement Thursday said the men already has arrived in San Francisco. Mrs. Betz, and Ralph's wife, who lives at 2418 Douglas street, left late Thursday for San Francisco.
Ralph has never seen his four year old daughter, Mary Frances, born after he left for the Pacific. Neither of the men has yet been informed of the death of their father in April last year. Relatives here agreed it would be best to keep the news from them as long as they were held captive.
The brothers, who were taken directly to Japan after their capture, were released from a camp near Kobe, the wire from their employers stated. No word has been received from them by relatives here for several months. They last wrote in April and May, and then only on form cards and letters printed by the Japanese, but signed by the Sioux Cityans.
Mrs. Paul Betz and daughter, Paul Ann, live in Long Beach, Cal. Ralph has another daughter, Marjorie, who was only three at the time of his departure.

WYOMING WOMAN LEARNS CAPTURED HUSBAND IS ALIVE

Mrs. Ralph Betz Goes to Coast to Greet Returning Prisoner.
Wyoming, Sept. 13, 1945 - (Special) - Mrs. Ralph Betz left for the west coast this morning on one of the happiest journeys anyone ever began. She is on her way to greet her husband, Ralph Betz, Sioux City, when he returns to this country after close to four years as a prisoner in a Japanese camp. Mrs. Betz is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Broderson, Wyoming.
She has just learned that her husband was among those former Guam civilians who came through their ordeal alive. When she sees him she will tell of their four year old daughter, Mary, to be seen for the first time by her father. The Betz's have another daughter, Margery.
Betz went to Guam in May, 1941 with his brother, Paul, who also is reported alive and returning to this country. Guam was one of the first former U.S. possessions to fall to the Japs, and both Betz boys were taken then.
Four times since his imprisonment began Ralph has been able to get some word back to his family here. But that word was vague, irregular, and it was almost impossible to tell whether he had sent it or whether it was Jap propaganda.
The two Betz boys, who were contractors before going to Guam, were engaged in building the projected air base on Guam in 1941. Since being captured they have been in Kobe, Japan, where they were when released.
Accompanying Mrs. Betz on her trip is her mother-in-law, Mrs. C.S. Betz, also of Sioux City.

THE SERVICE MEN
Four-Year Jap Prisoner Will Arrive Home Soon
Word has reached, Mrs. Ralph Betz that her husband will land in California quite soon after spending four years in a Japanese prison camp. Mr. Betz and his brother were contractors working on the air base on Guam at time of its attack and capture in May, 1941.
Mrs. Betz has received four communications from her husband, but like most all such messages gathered little comfort from them. The Betz Bros. were imprisoned at Kobe, Japan since their capture.
Mr. and Mrs Betz have two small daughters, the youngest four year old Mary having never seen her daddy. Mrs. Betz is the former Ruth Helena Brodersen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thos. Brodersen of near Wyoming.
Mrs. Betz and her mother-in-law, Mrs C.S. Betz of Sioux City, left last Thursday morning for the west coast to meet the returning boys.

Mrs Alice Alden and Mrs Grace Vrooman entertained the members of the class of 1931 of the Wyoming high school and a few others, Wednesday evening at the Alden home west of Wyoming, as a farewell courtesy to Miss Ruth-Helena Brodersen, who will soon leave for Denver to enter St. Anthony's hospital. Bridge was played. Miss Brodersen was presented with a gift.

Info from Margie Betz Coleman.....Ruth went to Denver for nurses training. She lived with Aunt Ruth while there. After six months she went back home because her Mother was ill. She never completed nurses training. However, she was able to get a job as a Nurses Aide at St. Vincent's Hospital in Los Angeles. At St. Vincent's she was on a floor that had male patients. She worked 3 to 11 and Ralph would give her a ride over or she took the bus. At night we would pick her back up. When they built Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood she got a job there in the nursery. I think she really loved working with the babies as she was at Daniel Freeman for 23 years.
