AL CHRISTIANSEN
1903 - 1991
The Nora Springs-Rock Falls Board of
Education chose to honor "AI
Christiansen"by naming the high school
baseball field after him, thus today's
dedication ceremony.
He was born on a. farm south of Rock
Falls on December 12, 1903. He lived
his life in the Nora Springs/Osage
area. He attended country school and
went on to Cedar valley Seminary in
Osage and later transfered to the Osage
High School where Al's baseball love
affair began--75 years ago.
He organized a neighborhood baseball
team and they played their games in a
cow pasture. Later he organized a team
made up of players from around the area
known as the Mitchell County Red Sox
and Al was the number one pitcher.
Baseball gave way to softball and he
organized two softball teams which
played in a night league at Nora
Springs.
He returned to baseball by organizing,
bankrolling, and managing, the Nora
Springs Merchants and later the North
Stars. Many of Al", teams won league
championships and qualified for the
Iowa Amateur State Tournament. The
1974 team finished 6th in the state
tournament and the 1982 team finished
2nd.
The highlight of Al's baseball career
was being inducted into the Iowa
Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986.TO remember Al only as "Casey" or "Mr.
Baseball" would do him a great
injustice. In 1955, he was recognized
as an Iowa Master Farmer. He served
nine years on the Mitchell County Board
of Supervisors and thirty years on the
Mitchell County Fair Board. He was a
4-H leader for 16 years. He was an
avid bowler and was' named to the Mason
City Bowling Hall of Fame. He was an
active Kiwanian and for years donated
hogs for the Nora Springs Kiwanis
Pancake day. I
He supported amateur athletics of all
kinds with time, energy, and money. He
actively supported the NS-RF athletic
program and NIACCIs "Big Blue" program. It was said, that "Al had farming as
his livelihood but BASEBALL WAS HIS
PASSION" .
AL'S MOTTO:
"WHAT YOU DO, DO WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT.
THINGS DONE BY HALVES ARE NEVER DONE
RIGHT."
