Leonard took great pleasure in introducing young people to livestock, especially horses.

Leonard was born on Jan. 26, 1920, in Mason City, to Charles I. and Sadie (Togstead) Boyd. He remained a lifelong resident of the area, where he raised, bought and sold livestock. Leonard was very active in the merchandising of his cattle and hogs, and was well known and respected in the auction market throughout the state.

Leonard served his country during World War II in the European Theatre. He participated in the historic military campaigns of Africa, Italy and France. In 1943, Leonard was seriously wounded in Lyon, France, for which he received the Purple Heart. Following his lengthy recovery and discharge from the Army, he returned to Mason City to peruse his passion for the livestock industry.
